The more I read about Caroline Kennedy...

the more I like her. The pundits keep trying to draw parallels between her and Sarah Palin, but honestly I don’t see the connection. I see an intelligent, thoughtful woman who has educated herself, raised her family and now sees an opportunity to serve. And service really is the key word here. She already has all the money she needs, so she is obviously not on some kind of power trip and she can’t get bought off by the banks or the corporations. What she can do is can step up and take her best shot at what her father and other family members did or tried to do, and that is to create policy that is best for _all Americans. Think about it - what “special interests” will she be beholden to if she gets appointed?

New York is lucky to have this opportunity to get a Senator who has never been bought and paid for by anyone. I hope they take full advantage.

Christmas fun at the Sandbox Inn

The 15th annual Christmas day brunch was by any measurement an unqualified success. The food was delish and consumed in mass quantities; the weather as perfect as it gets; the company amazing, interesting and talented. Sand was carved. Carols were sung. Kazoos were tooted and guitars/ukes were strummed.

Thanks to all who stopped by and made this a Christmas to remember. Hope we can do it again next year!

Come Carol with the Island Uke Players tonight

at the Community Christmas party (5:30 on the porch at city hall.) Munch on cookies and hot cider; find out who won the float competition in the parade; listen to JoAnn read my SPI Christmas poem and sing Christmas carols with the Saturn Street Strummers - pictured here in their caroling finery.

Wrapping paper just ends up in the landfill

so instead of buying paper or gift bags, I'm gifting in cheap, reusable shopping bags. Just an idea...

I love my mosquito-repelling iPhone!

I can use it as a flashlight. As a level. I can tune my uke with it. It can suggest a place to eat, no matter what neighborhood I might find myself in. It keeps track of what I need at Wally World and it can entertain me for hours on end. And now it will keep the stupid mosquito that has already nailed me three times away. Or so I am told. I just paid .99 for the anti mosquito app which supposedly makes a noise that mosquitos hate.

So far so good.

it would appear that my invitation to merry martini

got lost in the mail this year. Alas. Heading to WannaWanna soon for an "alternatini" with friends. Come join us!

Shop the island with me tomorrow-

at Paragraphs on Padre - our brand spankin' not-even-open-yet new bookstore! We'll be having big fun in the parking lot. Joni will have a sweet selection of used books (I am told); I'll have some sandcastle books and tools and sandcastle lesson gift certificates for your gifting pleasure -- and I may even carve a little sandcastle in a little bowl if I can get my act together. Photographer Wade Dunkin will be there too with some of his most excellent surfing photos, I would guess.

Stop by and say howdy!

Golden Retrievers = Snobs?

Well, probably not the golden ones themselves (I suspect if polled the dogs would say "the more the merrier!") - but maybe their owners.
I recently had a chat with an island dog owner whose yellow lab (adopted from the shelter) had originally been invited to walk in the Christmas parade with the ‘trievers. The proud doggy momma purchased some holiday finery for her pooch, only to be told that the invitation had been rescinded. Apparently only retrievers were going to be allowed, after all.

I know the goldens and their people won money last year and donated it to the shelter - which was awfully nice of them. But what is with this inviting and then disinviting other dogs? Seems pretty - well, elitist, doesn’t it? And how swell would it have been to honor Jill Joseph’s memory - and her legendary support of the LMHS - by inviting ALL rescue dogs to join the goldens in the parade?

Seems like someone missed a great opportunity to do just that.
But something to consider for next year, perhaps?

sandy feet meets the Gossip Lady

MomFeets was searching for me on Youtube and stumbled across this little gem from last summer.
It's a pretty good interview, if I do say so myself.

Emerson Schreiner website update

Well hell yeah I am going to brag on yet another of my brilliant nephews! Emerson studies Art & Design at the University of Michigan. He was the fiddle player at Pirate Days this year. And he just updated his website and I am seriously impressed. Check it out at http://budurl.com/emer
