"Our Beaches' Future"

This is a "teaser" on the CC Caller's website for an in-depth report regarding the on-going controversy surrounding the closing of certain beaches to vehicular traffic. The reporter traveled to other beach communities - including SPI, where he talked to various locals including yours truly - to discover how other beach towns are dealing with this issue.

The series is scheduled to run Jan. 22-25, 2006.

Hey wait, the preview article sez:

"The ban on vehicular traffic, an issue that is hot in Corpus Christi and Galveston, is conspicuously absent in South Padre Island, where every inch of beach is off limits to vehicular traffic. Perhaps that's because the town with 237 commercial buildings and zero industrial ones knows its beach, and the tourism dollars it attracts, is the city’s lifeblood."

That should be 5 miles of beach within Town limits that are off limits for beach driving, since you can drive for over 20 miles on the north side of the Town on county & conservation lands with absolutely no problem, barring getting stuck in the sand.

LOL, I couldn't imagine the 4th of July if beach driving was allowed on Town Beach - but it might help plow down some of those pesky umbrellas the vendors put out!
